How to introduce your baby to food groups
When a baby turns 6 months old, he should be introduced to food groups. Most moms worry about how to introduce their babies to food and their reaction to is. This is the most crucial and important phase of motherhood where giving the healthiest and appropriate diet is the biggest concern for mothers. It is obvious that each person in this world is unique and same is the case with children. Each and every child is different from the other so it is recommended to the mothers to not to expect their child to respond exactly like other children in case of food intake.
Importance of Introducing Food Groups
First time moms need to know why it is essential to introduce the 6 main food groups to the diet of their babies. Basically, when a baby enters the sixth month of its age, the need of nutrients increases and merely milk cannot cover all these needs. This is because during the first year, a baby will become 3 times heavier than its birth weight and its body length increase up to 50%. However, it doesn’t mean that breast feeding should be stopped at this age.
Along with milk, gradually start giving your child grains, fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products. Addition of these food groups will help your child in getting essential vitamins, iron and minerals which in turn will make him or her mentally and physically a healthy child. It will also help your child to slowly become habitual of solid food. You do not need to introduce all food groups at one time, however gradual introduction is important for a baby’s health.
What Should Be Given From Sixth Month?
In the beginning, you should try some soft fruits like banana, avocado, mango, pumpkin etc. Ground grains could also be given in the form of cereals. Heavy food like meat should not be given very early as the baby’s digestive system may not be very strong enough for its digestion.
Wheat, sugars, processed food and dairy products should be avoided too, in the initial days of solid intake. When it comes to soft and pulpy fruits and vegetables, they must be served in the form of puree or mashed food so that children an swallow them easily.
What Should Be Given From Seventh to Ninth Month?
From the seventh month, you can start giving your child small chunks of vegetables and fruits instead of mashed food. As the chunks will allow them to recognize their food and play with them while eating. Apart from this, you can also start giving them the same meal that you are taking yourself. You can add oats, rice, potatoes, bread and other starchy foods to their diet plan. Also, protein rich foods like lentils, dairy and poultry products can be introduced at this stage.
What Should Be The Best From Tenth Month?
From the tenth month and onward your baby’s digestive system will become ready to digest every kind of food that an adult can eat.
